SPRING Into Safe Cleaning

Spring is here, which means it’s time to freshen up our homes with a deep clean! While tackling dust bunnies and organizing closets can be rewarding, it’s also physically demanding. As a physical therapist, I see many patients who strain their backs, shoulders, and knees during household chores. To stay safe and avoid injury, remember SPRING:

SStretch & Warm Up
Take 5 minutes to loosen up your shoulders, back, and legs before diving into cleaning.

PProtect Your Joints
Use knee pads when kneeling, engage your core to protect your spine, and keep your back straight with core engaged while lifting.

RRest & Hydrate
Take breaks every 30-45 minutes to prevent fatigue and drink plenty of water.

IImprove Your Posture
Avoid twisting while lifting, use long-handled tools to reduce overreaching, and keep movements controlled.

NNever Overreach
Use a step stool instead of stretching too far when cleaning high areas. Keep objects close to your body when lifting.

GGive Yourself a Cool Down
Stretch at the end of your session to keep your muscles from stiffening up later.

By following SPRING, you can keep your home fresh while protecting your body. Happy and healthy cleaning!
